GRAFTON — It’s been almost four months since 20-year-old Kevin J. Vulter’s Jeep slammed into a stone wall on North Street in the early morning of Sept. 26, fatally injuring the popular Grafton High School graduate and former varsity football player. But in that short time, a committee of about 15 friends and family members has made significant headway toward raising the $150,000 needed to install lights and a memorial garden at Grafton High School’s Harry Stevens Memorial Field. John J. “Jack” Schofield, Mr. Vulter’s uncle and chief organizer of the Kevin Vulter Field Renovation Fund, said his nephew, who graduated in 2006, never had the chance to play home football games under the lights. Grafton High School is one of the few schools in the Southern Worcester County League without field lighting. Two years ago, the school started renting lights from Mamco Construction for one evening game a season. Mr. Vulter had completed an electrician apprenticeship with National Grid shortly before his death and was working with Mamco to install lights for an Oct. 3 game, in which his brother Ryan would be playing.
“Kevin was really excited to get to see (Ryan) play under the lights,” Mr. Schofield said. Mr. Vulter’s football connection and the lack of permanent field lighting prompted the decision to start the fund. “He was definitely one of the stars of the team. His family decided it would be a great way to honor him, because of his love for football,” Mr. Schofield said. The committee is organized in two subgroups: logistics, chaired by Mamco Construction owner and family friend Daniel W. Page; and fundraising, chaired by Mr. Vulter’s neighbor Richard E. Muhr. The group has already raised about $42,000 through a Thanksgiving rock concert, a breakfast, bake sales, a raffle, movie night at Grafton Middle School and sales of “Forever Kevin” stickers and “Get to the Choppa!” T-shirts. The shirts commemorate Mr. Vulter’s impersonation of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s line in his favorite movie, “Predator.” Mr. Vulter’s cousin, 8-year-old Josie Schofield, made 50 to 100 green bead ornaments with a metal cross or angel, which sold out. Upcoming plans include a gala on March 28 at High Fields Country Club, featuring a gourmet dinner, silent auction and open mic performances. Michael Banks, Mr. Vulter’s uncle and a professional chef, is organizing a sushi cooking class with award-winning chef Laddavanh “Anna” Bouphavichith of Yama Zakura Sushi Bar & Fusion Cuisine in Northboro. Mr. Muhr said that after a busy season of events, the committee is turning to cultivating relationships with major donors who may be interested in sustaining the cause. He said he’s been inspired by the outpouring of support so far. “The willingness of the community to come together speaks volumes about Kevin’s family and the community.” Mr. Vulter’s impact on the close-knit Grafton community is constantly brought up in conversation. Mr. Page recalled Kevin as a cheerful, hardworking employee who worked late, came in early and was always willing to go out of his way to help people. “Very few men had the amount of honor and respect he had at 20,” Mr. Page said. Mr. Muhr’s wife, Lori, taught Mr. Vulter in Grades 2 and 3 and recalled a story he wrote about helping others as being what’s most important in life. “That’s why when you ask, people are more than willing to give,” Mr. Muhr said.
